Avian Flu

Avian Flu

Sadly, avian flu is wreaking havoc amongst wild bird populations that are already facing considerable pressure, and its unprecedented impact is continuing.

Avian flu has been detected in wild bird populations at a number of locations in Northern Ireland.

If you find dead waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report them to BCSGeneral@daera-ni.gov.uk or the DAERA helpline on 0300 200 7840 - do not touch or handle the birds yourself. Note: not all wild birds will be collected if avian flu has been detected in a specific area.

If you find a sick or dying wild bird, these should be reported to the landowner or the USPCA to determine any further course of action.

It's really important that you DO NOT touch any sick, dying or dead birds. Also, please keep your dog on a lead to avoid tthem coming into contact with sick or dying birds.

If you feed your garden birds, clean bird feeders regularly, and change the water daily. If you see any sick or dead birds in your garden, remove your feeders to help to prevent the spread of disease - do not call the DAERA helpline.

For further information see DAERA's advice to the public.
