The Sea Deep Easter Eggcase Trail - Ballywalter Beach
About the event
Join us for a guided Easter Egg Case Hunt and search the shore for shark and skate egg cases.
Egg cases, better known as ‘mermaids’ purses’, are the empty cases of egg-laying sharks and skates. Once the shark pup has emerged, the empty egg case often gets washed up on the beach and can be found among the seaweed in the strandline. These cases can be identified to the exact species that laid them, providing important information on the different kinds of sharks and skates in our seas.
Egg case hunting is great fun and you'll be helping shark conservation at the same time. Recording where different types of egg cases are found helps us to find out more about our egg-laying sharks and their pups. We can use this information to protect these areas, known as shark nursery grounds.
If you can't join us on the Easter Egg Case Trail, don't worry, you can still take part! There is a free and easy 'How To' Guide on our website to help you organise your own egg case hunt available
It's easy, you can do it while walking with your dog, go with friends, or ask your teacher to arrange an egg case hunt at a beach near you. We would love to see your egg case adventures, tag us @SeaDeepNI #TheEasterEggcaseTrail
