SCHOOLS MARINE LITTER ART COMPETITION 2018

Posted: Monday 16th October 2017 by LivingSeas

Ulster Wildlife and the Northern Ireland Science Festival are pleased to announce the launch of our Marine litter Art Competition 2018. Our competition is an initiative to raise public awareness, particularly among our students, to the high levels of marine litter, especially plastics, in our seas.

In recent years, it has become widely recognised that the most pervasive and dangerous type of marine litter is plastic. A totally man-made product, plastic does not biodegrade in nature – instead it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces.

Each year 8 million tonnes of plastic litter are dumped in our ocean, at least 100,000 marine mammals, turtles and sharks and 1 million sea birds die from plastic ingestion or entanglement.

Our Marine Litter Art competition involves students visiting their local beach where they will collect some marine litter and turn it into a piece of marine-wildlife themed art. The winning pieces will be used to highlight the issue of marine litter at Ulster Wildlife events around the coast and at our Living Seas Art Exhibition in Downpatrick in June 2018.

Entrants to this competition must create an original piece of 3D artwork which is themed on marine wildlife. Entries must contain actual marine litter collected from a local shore.

This competition is open to any student in Northern Ireland enrolled in primary or secondary education, including those in home education.

Prize for winning entries will be tickets for 30 students and 2 teachers to one of the events run as part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival 2018. There will be two separate prizes, one for entrants at primary school level and one for entrants at secondary school level.

To enter please download and read the full Competition Brief and complete, and return the application form: Click Here (PDF 194KB).

Closing date for entries is 22 January 2018 which gives 3 months to complete a beach clean and create your masterpiece!

Good luck!
