Project Coordinator - Sea Deep

Salary: £26,665 - £28,097

We are seeking an experienced marine biologist to coordinate the delivery of our new HLF-funded project – Sea Deep. This project aims to secure new protection for endangered skate and shark species in Northern Irish waters and to increase the level of understanding and participation among the wider public, by involving recreational angling groups, other sea users, schools and local communities in conservation-focused data collection.

Contract: 3 year fixed-term contract. This post is subject to a 6-month probationary period.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Working in collaboration with the DAERA Marine and Fisheries Division, the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) and Queens University Belfast, this will provide new evidence to secure protection and management measures, and actively restore locally threatened skate and shark species.

The postholder will be responsible for managing an NI-wide Tagging Programme and coordinating day-to-day activities including the recruitment, training and support of volunteers (recreational and commercial sea users). They will be responsible for communicating data with government officials, statutory management bodies, political stakeholders, volunteers and the general public; to successfully achieve conservation measures for endangered shark and skate species in NI inshore waters. They will be responsible for working in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast to pilot and evaluate innovative conservation approaches to elasmobranch species restoration. They will be responsible for delivering a structured programme of engagement with schools and community groups focusing on developing and supporting committed individuals to ensure project sustainability. They will also be responsible for ensuring the project meets its targets and budget requirements.
