Balloo Wetland

Observations from staff, volunteers and members on our Nature Reserves this week.

Nature reserves may look completely wild, but our 19 reserves across Northern Ireland are actually carefully managed by a dedicated team. We protect, restore and create a mix of habitats where wildlife can thrive.

Balloo Wetland

We've been carrying out maintenance to some of our small ponds over the last month. We're clearing reedmace from a scrape in Balloo Wetland Nature Reserve to restore some open water habitat. This should benefit the pond invertebrates and particularly be a benefit to dragonflies and damselflies ~ Ryan Bradley, Nature Reserves Officer

Bog Meadows

Our Wildlife Watch group had a great session this weekend building bird boxes at the Bog Meadows Nature Reserve and learning all about our garden birds, thanks to local bird expert, Aidan Crean! ~ Deborah McLaughlin, Bog Meadows Community Engagement Officer

Milford Cutting

A before and after shot of the work we have completed in the small pond at Milford Cutting Nature Reserve. Here we cleared the grasses that were encroaching in to the pond. This small pond is a fantastic place to see newts in the spring ~ Ryan Bradley, Nature Reserves Officer

Glenullin Bog

Works are nearly complete on one of our biggest nature reserves projects to date- the restoration of Glenullin Bog. This site was purchased in 2020 and, thanks to support from the NIEA Challenge Fund, we have now installed 450 peat dams and nearly 5 and a half miles of peat bunds. This was needed as Glenullin Bog had been heavily impacted by drainage, peat cutting and fires in the past. Interesting wildlife at Glenullin Bog includes Skylark, Irish Hare ass well as dragonflies, butterflies and moths. ~ Andy Crory, Nature Reserves Manager
