Lizard (c) Philip McErlean

Observations from staff, volunteers and members on our Nature Reserves this week.

Nature reserves may look completely wild, but our 19 reserves across Northern Ireland are actually carefully managed by a dedicated team. We protect, restore and create a mix of habitats where wildlife can thrive.

Slievenacloy Nature Reserve

I didn't go to Slievenacloy for nearly 2 weeks but was able to make a visit on July 26. Unfortunately the weather was dull and I saw only 2 lizards. The good news is that both were neonates - the first babies of 2021 (for me anyway).  Both were losing their black colouration so I would guess they were at least a week -maybe two- old.

In better weather conditions I'm sure you would see many more.  Where there's one lizard there's probably 5 or 6 nearby! ~Philip McErlean, Ulster Wildlife Member

Bog Meadows Nature Reserve

We've been busy this past week delivering a number of events in partnership with Féile an Phobail, including 'Wetland Wildlife Safaris' and guided walks 'as gaeilge' Thanks to everyone that came along and joined us! ~Deborah McLaughlin, Bog Meadows Community Engagement Officer
