Memorial to Jennifer Fulton unveiled at Haughey’s Bog

A memorial plaque has been erected at Haughey’s Bog, near Omagh, to commemorate Jennifer Fulton, former Chief Executive of Ulster Wildlife, on the first anniversary of her passing.

Jennifer, who sadly passed away last May after a short illness, was a remarkable force of nature. Her passion and foresight for peatland restoration led to a major initiative across Northern Ireland and cross-border from 2017 to 2022 – a legacy that remains central to the charity’s work today.

Haughey’s Bog was one of the last sites purchased by the charity under Jennifer’s leadership in 2023, with ambitious plans underway to transform this former commercially harvested bog into a thriving demonstration hub for peatland restoration, in partnership with the An Creagán Centre – a lasting legacy to Jennifer’s passion and dedication.

Jennifer’s husband, Norman, and two sons, James and Peter, joined a small number of key representatives from the charity and beyond at the unveiling of the plaque including DAERA Minister Andrew Muir MLA, Dawn Miskelly, Chief Executive of Ulster Wildlife, Craig Bennett, Chief Executive of the Wildlife Trusts and John Donaghy, Manager of the An Creagán Centre.

Following the unveiling, Jennifer’s family and attendees toured Haughey’s Bog and nearby Black Bog Special Area of Conservation (SAC), led by Simon Gray, Head of Peatland Recovery at Ulster Wildlife. The tour highlighted the charity’s plans to work with An Creagán to restore 30 hectares of severely degraded habitat, connecting it with Black Bog SAC, one of the most intact areas of active raised bog in Northern Ireland, located about 100m away. This vital work will help bring nature back, improve water quality and tackle climate change.

Ulster Wildlife extends its heartfelt thanks to Jennifer’s family and friends who generously donated in her memory, ensuring her passion for championing nature’s recovery continues.
