Nature was the most popular theme chosen by the public – above architecture, landmarks, historical figures, and sports – highlighting how much we value our wildlife.
Katy says: “Nature is intrinsic to our lives and our culture, and the public’s choice shows that we are a nation of nature lovers. But nature is in freefall: in Northern Ireland alone, one in nine species is at risk of extinction, and across the UK, wildlife faces major threats from habitat loss to climate change.
"Nature isn’t just beautiful – it underpins our economy, food, air, water and wellbeing. And it is one of our greatest allies in increasing our resilience to climate impacts such as flooding and drought.
"Having images of incredible species on our banknotes is a brilliant way to put nature front and centre in people’s minds. If the wildlife in our pockets and wallets reminds us to value and protect the natural world, that can only be a good thing – because nature is our greatest investment.”
Katy will join a panel of experts to draw up a wildlife shortlist to put before the public including wildlife filmmakers and presenters Gordon Buchanan, Miranda Krestovnikoff and Nadeem Perera, and academics Steve Ormerod and Dawn Scott.
The final decision will be made by the Bank', but it is likely to be a few years before the new notes enter circulation.
