We are seeking volunteers to to help with practical work at the Bog Meadows site and neighbouring St. James Community Farm throughout the year.

Situated in West Belfast, beside the M1 motorway, Bog Meadows offers a mosaic of species-rich meadows, reedbeds, ponds and hedgerows and is a huge asset for local people and wildlife.  The 'Our People, Our Places' is our exciting community engagement project where we are working to create a vibrant community hub centred around the nature reserve and neighbouring St. James Community Farm and we are looking for volunteers to help with practical work on the site, assist in our community garden project or help with our regular and seasonal community engagement events.  There are opportunities to suit a variety of ages and capabilities.

Main tasks could include:

  • Carry out a range of practical conservation activities on the Bog Meadows nature reserve such as scrub control, access maintenance, meadow cutting, mowing, hedge maintenance, pond clearance, rush control, invasive species control etc.
  • The safe use of nature reserves tools and equipment include hand-tools such as bow saws, loppers and rakes.
  • Keep in regular contact with Ulster Wildlife.

Skills required:  

  • No previous experience is required but a basic knowledge and interest in nature conservation and wildlife would be beneficial.
  • Enthusiastic and good interpersonal skills
  • Be reasonably fit and enjoy working outdoors.
  • Be reliable and trustworthy
  • A good team player
  • Uphold the good reputation of Ulster Wildlife. 

Ulster Wildlife will provide volunteers with all the necessary information, training, supervision and support, to carry out this work.

Hours: The Nature Fit volunteers meet on Wednesdays from 10am till 3pm 

Expenses: 

Volunteers can claim for reasonable receipted out of pocket expenses and Ulster Wildlife will provide the necessary materials to carry out the role. Volunteers can claim mileage at 45p per mile up to a 30 mile return trip per day.  Public transport costs will be reimbursed on provision of a valid travel receipt. Volunteers should aim to take the most economical mode of transport possible.
