Ballynahone bog

Observations from staff, volunteers and members on our Nature Reserves this week.

Nature reserves may look completely wild, but our 19 reserves across Northern Ireland are actually carefully managed by a dedicated team. We protect, restore and create a mix of habitats where wildlife can thrive.

Ballynahone Bog Nature Reserve

We've been removing scrub on Ballynahone bog nature reserve to stop encroaching scrub drying out the bog. Birch, Scots pine, willow and whins are all being removed. Only a few people with wet feet, so, not a bad day! ~ Ronald Surgenor, Nature Reserves Officer

Bog Meadows Nature Reserve

Our young volunteers were out in force again at the weekend! This time they cleared all the rubbish along the boundary of the reserve at Milltown cemetery and then helped remove the last of the material from our scrub clearance activities. All this work was done just in time for the start of the bird nesting season. ~ Deborah McLaughlin, Bog Meadows Community Engagement Officer

Volunteer on our nature reserves

We are seeking volunteers to assist in the management of our nature reserves, specifically Balloo Woodland and Wetland, Bangor (every Friday) Slievenacloy, Lisburn (every Tuesday) and Bog Meadows, Belfast (Monday and Wednesday).

No previous experience is required but basic knowledge and interest in nature conservation and wildlife would be beneficial.
