Nature Notes 22 March 2022

Observations from staff and members on our Nature Reserves this week.

Nature reserves may look completely wild, but our 19 reserves across Northern Ireland are actually carefully managed by a dedicated team. We protect, restore and create a mix of habitats where wildlife can thrive.

Garry Bog SAC

A huge drain on Garry Bog SAC being blocked with peat dams sandwiched between timber sheets for extra reinforcement. Although Garry Bog is not an Ulster Wildlife nature reserve, it is one of The CANN projects we are working on, to protect and restore habitats. ~ Simon Gray, Senior Technical Officer

These drains were dug many decades ago when the plan was to plant conifers. Thankfully that never happened. This work will undo the slow drying out of the bog and help it weather climate change. Great work by Ulster Wildlife and We are Martin for the CANN project. ~ Trish Fox, Senior Technical Officer

Slievenacloy Nature Reserve

Can you spot and name the animal in this picture? Here are some clues: Philip, our volunteer surveyor found them basking in the warmth of the sun at Slievenacloy Nature Reserve. It's native to Ireland and can be seen in many habitats such as woodland and grassland. Comment on our social media if you know what creature we're talking about!

Bog Meadows Nature Reserve

Our youth volunteer team had a great time at the reserve. Following a litter pick and tidy up, they started practicing their ID skills and learning all about the wonderful wetland creatures that live at Bog Meadows Nature Reserve ~ Deborah McLaughlin, Bog Meadows Community Engagement Officer

Volunteer on our nature reserves

We are seeking volunteers to assist in the management of our nature reserves, specifically Balloo Woodland and Wetland, Bangor (every Friday) Slievenacloy, Lisburn (every Tuesday) and Bog Meadows, Belfast (Monday and Wednesday).

No previous experience is required but basic knowledge and interest in nature conservation and wildlife would be beneficial.
